Non scale R/C indoor and also park flier kits machines are BANNED, BANNED, BANNED, BANNED FROM OUR FUN FLY EVENTS, DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT. We will not accept any excuses from now on. If in doubt ask before you travel

April 2000

Autumn Dates Sept 30th Oct 21st Nov 25th Dec 30th

F/F Barry had his Quickie going very well and has a twin motor German design nearly finished. Peter Smart’s new WW1 Co2 powered range look beautiful as ever, nice Taube with bits of string all over it. Nice to see a wide range of F/F rubber machines - very reliable and stable Volkes Plane and colourful Butterfly as per Aeromodeller. Lincoln had a good night, all of his stick and tissue rubber jobs flew well. Bernard had a very nice electric powered, Al Backstrom designed “Could Be” (Aeromodeller Jan 94) flying wing thing, which was its self based on a Fauvel AV10 from the 1930’s. It has Depron wing and two 50mA cells + KP00 direct drive. Bernard said he could not design one of his own because he is not as clever as Al - well that’s not what he said, but I could tell that was what he was thinking! Nice to see John from Melton back again, alas his ankle is not healing very well but he had some really nice new foam rubber powered models, pilots being very noteworthy Ray flew a nice rubber powered airliner with a single clear plastic prop up front. Good to see Peter Frostick at the home of foam, flew a really nice little Mustang and rubber helicopter. Mark’s new vintage F/F design is called the Steredent An American company will start manufacturing new Lithium Sulphur cells next year, they have 5 times the capacity of Lithium Ion cells!

Remotes Mark has finally managed to build an efficient voltage booster. The Mk 2 device has been used to power a 3g WES Tech. servo and IR Rx. It’s lowest working voltage is 2v. The new Z Tron twin steering infra red Rx uses 2mA and only weighs 1.5g! Andrew flew a test machine using the cheap 27mHz Twin Turbo control system. All went well when he got the hang of stopping one motor temporarily, it’s not proportional - BUT Z Tron do a new micro chip that converts it to proportional. Two micro processors are available depending on the age of your system Simon flew an excellent new pure flying wing - no vertical fins. It has an infra red proportional control system which alters the thrust of the two flight motors to steer the vehicle. The direct drive motors are VERY quiet which embellish otherwise smooth and graceful 2 minute flights, excellent and cheap. The control system is available as a kit and will add 1.5g to the models weight. It can be powered from a DC/DC voltage converter so you can run the cells down to 1v. The new Z Tron Tx takes a huge 1 Amp so we are using a big battery pack taped to the bottom, 800mA and 8 cells. Ray’s “old” R/C Miles style racer flew really well A dodgey speed controller wire prevented Mark’s 14” Stagger Wing from getting off. His 16” R/C Albatross went well, Simon steering it round Chris’s “huge” 22” span balsa/Mylar SE5, the Red Baron strikes again! Peter Frostick had some good flights with his own designed IR system, it does not clash with the Z Tron system which is good. His rubber powered R/C Lacey goes really well. and everything else he touches! Maxon, makers of coreless motors, have an advert showing a rubber powered toy plane with a slogan Saying they have their motors every where, well almost - Wrong! Simon’s original R/C twin motor steering plane used two Maxon 0.75W motors.

Chin up Bill Gates of Microsoft, without his easy to use software and cheap PC’s you would not be reading this. Bill has been appointed Senior Vice President of the Aeronutz working sub committee on information.

Nice photos of scale indoor R/C machines on Page 54/55 of Electric Flight International, taken at Parklands, most of them foam.

James, from Cambridge University came to our last fun fly to research his fourth year project. He was very impressed by our toy aeroplanes, so much so he has promised to make us a 0.5g stepper motor before Easter. Well done James! The whole point of being clever is to do stuff us mortals can’t? Otherwise, what’s the point of being clever? He drinks Pepsi. Charles from Texas seemed impressed by our wide range of machines. Rumour has it that the American’s have banned foam models from indoor competitions. Aeronutz banned competitions! Which we felt, stifles development. How can I write rules that allow for next years developments? And worst of all, you need an army of folks to police it all.

Bernard was arrested in ASDA by the style police, He was wearing his new baseball cap and shell suit following comments about his green jacket in last months news letter. Aeromodellers are not too fussed about clothes, they are for keeping us warm and allow use to carry tools about in the pockets. To keep us up with social trends we suggest this summers colour will be yellow.

Hello to a new flier who came up from Brixworth, Northampton, He had a nice little R/C park flier (not flown indoors) and some successful stick and tissue rubber F/F machines. Flight Hook are coming up to our April event, so bring some cash and splash it about. Their range of goodies has grown considerably in the last year. Nice to see two new couples having a look around at our event. One had been in the gym next door, Mark had a chat with them, they seemed impressed by Peter Smarts models! In general, we seem to have integrated remote control and F/F models better than most indoor venues. We have an excellent range of toy planes, the atmosphere is progressive and dynamic - lots of new ideas. It doesn’t matter too much if you idea does not work first time, just means you don’t have to find a new project to work on! So go ahead start work on that rubber powered, IR controlled F15E, who knows, maybe one day you will get all the bits working at the same time. Our last event of 2000 is on 30th Dec. at the end of a week when most of us will be on holiday so we may super charge the evening with some more trade stands and displays of building and flying new technology micro planes - interested? Maplin are selling a nice multi meter for half price, We hope to have a very special guest at our October event ….

Park Flyer The big manufactures are now producing some really nice electric R/C park fliers. Robbe have a Buker Jungmeister while Kavan have a very nice Sopwith Pup at 33” span and a Fokker DIII at 34” span. When I was a lad ….. Needless to say, don’t make a nuisance of your self when flying on a local site. Simon has developed a new wing structure for small outdoor models using 0.5mm Depron and balsa. It will be used on his new Avia park flier design, which will be a plan in the near future. Designed for use with cheap motors and servos. Don’t delay build one today, ready for a tomorrows summers day, hey, way, say ….. Overseas chaps might like to subscribe to an English magazine, as they seem to be covering small model development.
