Simon has sorted out his R/C retractable undercarriage, it is fitted to his successful high technology twin motor steering aircraft and also has navigation lights. The undies went up and down and it taxied OK, but did not fly as the Tx motor steering mixer got all confused with the U/C activation the Tx has 6 channels and the Rx has four and the mixing is complex
ASDA are selling nice long pronged stainless steel hair grips that are excellent for gentle clamping duties. Flight Hook are come along to our December event,
Dave Boddington stopped by with some copies of his new mag. Model Flier. He liked Bernards new twin motor Burnelli fuselage wing thing, but alas went home and missed some successful flights.
Nice to see a free flight rubber Happy Flappy wing thing, with one wing then the other. Used metal crank arms rather than wood, reduced the wind resistance we are told. Went well, hope to see it again sometime. Thanks to everyone who sent in some postage stamps.
Dave Ridgeway had a nice new Flying Flea going F/F but is destined for two channel R/C, needless to say it was very small. He fitted an elevator to his little R/C Farman after dinner. It original weighed a svelte 53g from its 22" span, WES Tech 4.5 0.6 geared motor and KP01 prop made it cheap fun too.
New indoor events this autumn: Birmingham Peter
The BMFA Indoor Nats will be on 7th May at Nottingham, no Pistachio this year, Contact Dave
Oadbys little treasure has been doing extensive tests on twin KP00 motors. Calculations and empirical formulae have been cross referenced. The resulting data conclusively proved that two motors are EXACTLY twice as heavy as one! Bernard said " the breeze blew all me bits of paper on the floor, and what a lot of noise!"
The first indoor event aimed at the new park flier designs has arrived. It will be held near Southport next year, free flight folks are welcome. Fliers must have insurance, max. weight limit is 500gms.
Sergio at Z Tron has some new goodies for infra red control systems. He has a kit to increase the Tx IR emitters from three to 15! Which greatly increase the range. The Tx can now do mixing for V tail systems, he says his IR systems will be manufactured by MFA Direct in the USA from next year. His new twin motor steering Rx now has two detectors and two speed controllers built onto one boar making it very light weight. In addition, his 1A proportional speed controller is excellent for indoor R/C use, it does not have BEC and weighs 1.5 grams, run on 3 to 5.5 Volts. Mark has them in his twin steering Catalina and also the Gladiator. The speed controller is very simple, only three parts and can be supplied as a kit. If you want to use the speedo in 5 cells just wire its power supply to 4 cells to reduce the voltage, it consumes about 1ma.
Insurance you do not currently need to be insured to fly at AeroNutz events. However, it seems most folks are insured through the BMFA or Nexus. According to our friends in South Hampshire, many fliers have obtained a letter from their house insurance company confirming they are insured to fly model aircraft. It seems Nexus insurance cost about £8, so when you think about it, being insured is not a big expense anyway.
We are not allowing the use of R/C Mylar type (Wesp, Little Bee etc) slow fly machines to try and encourage folks to build 3D machines. This is because we expect to see more R/C machine in the future and space will be limited. We will have some excellent opportunities given the new technology batteries, motors and electronics. We are working towards 12" span scale micro planes with retracts and many scale features. We hope to have Reno, Schneider and GB races WW1 patrols etc etc. All this is still along way off, but it takes a lot of new skills to get there, so we (you?) need to start some developments now. RCS Technik have a balsa DH2 kit at about 22" span and Mark/Simon can supply details of other AeroNutz design to help new fliers get up to speed see our Gladiator design spec.
Unlike modern politicians, the person who accused the AeroNutz of giving false information has been big enough to apologise, having been proven wrong. Which confirms: A) dont take life too seriously B) AeroNutz are never wrong about anything (refer to A - Ed)
Long John is back at home and has already built three new models
Dr Eric has gone to fly his models in the great sports hall in the sky with Alan. Dr Eric was a great character who will be remembered for changing into his deck shoes before lifting the lid on his big green Harrods box to reveal several foam fun fliers, which he had a great time playing with and of course you cant buy - even in Harrods!
George has suggested the AeroNutz are going bankrupt. This is not true, we have always been bankrupt!
If you use a Z Tron speed controller (Kit $10, complete $20) you will not have BEC or supply voltage control so check servo / Rx requirements. The Z Tron speed controller requires 3 to 5.5 volts, if you are using five cells, connect its power supply wire to four cells to drop the voltage, as the no load voltage of the battery pack will be about 7 volts! Bench test show the speed controller glitches at about 15 grams of thrust and then the motor carries on running until 5 grams of thrust.
Bernard had a very interesting free flight electric twin motor, Depron, GX3 Burnelli lifting fuselage aircraft. It was made in Texas in 1929 and was one of a series of aircraft that used the wide confortable fuselage to generate lift. It featured more innovations than you can shake a stick at: low slung ailerons, motors that could be accessed by the crew, 4 wheels, retractable undies. He had trouble with it initially as he did not have any dihedral but bent a bit in and it went ok after that. His model uses two KP00s direct drive and three 50ma cells. Weighs in at 44grms, and 2.4 oz/Sq. Ft. The original fuselage was 12 x 18 bigger than Marks house (including the garden Ed)
M&S would like to wish all of you a happy Xmas and
